Commonwealth Bank: World’s Longest BBQ Marathon

Commonwealth Bank is a supporter of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and for years has helped spread the word about having a BBQ during September to raise awareness and funding for this incredibly important organisation. In order to help up the ante and make more noise about the cause and sponsorship we embarked on a Guinness World Record attempt to take out the World’s Longest BBQ record, officially launching Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in suitably large style.

Working alongside the PCFA, Guinness World Records and the Bank’s sponsorship and PR team, we recruited the celebrity chef, Ben O’Donoghue to host the event, sourced our BBQ team through internal comms within Commonwealth Bank, and roped in as many Beans as possible to lend a hand. Launching at 07:00 on September 1, 2011, over the next 26.5hrs our six-strong BBQ crew served up 1,000 bacon and egg rolls, 2,000 sausage sandwiches, 1,500 steaks, 350 veggie burgers, 1,500 cobs of corn and 350 chicken breasts. Consumers simply swapped a donation for any item of their choice from the BBQ – this alone raised $12,000, which when added to the amounts raised by the individual BBQ team members, totalled over $30,000. At 09:30 on September 2, 2011, Ben O’Donoghue counted down the final seconds before the record was officially in the hands of the Comm Bank crew (leaving greasy residue on the frame) for the attending media to capture.

Sydneysiders couldn’t fail to miss the BBQ, with coverage achieved on every major AM and FM radio station, Channel Nine Today, Channel Ten News and Channel Seven’s Sunrise, plus extensive print editorial in The Australian, Daily Telegraph and Central Magazine.
